Holiday Lesson Set

01a New Year Predictions
Time: 20+

Mode: Small Group Activity


Practice with will and won't, agreeing and disagreeing, predicting someone's future, asking for and offering hints. Students try to predict their group mates' New Year Resolutions.

Students write one:I will...and one I won't...New Year's Resolution for themselves for the coming new year.

The other students try to imagine (predict) the two resolutions. This lesson requires a little writing and a lot of discussion.

The class can become really animated when students realize what their group mates predict for the new year.

03a Silly Valentine’s Survey

If you're looking for a lesson that will turn your class into an explosion of English, Silly Valentine's Survey is the one you want.

Although the first part is a pretty normal Question and Answer time, the second part will really create uncontrollable laughter. Why?

Because, the answer to a seemingly innocent question is also used with a totally different question.

For example, an original question and answer dialogue would go like this:


Q: Do you like listening to music?
A: Yes, I do.
Q: Why?
A: It relaxes me and makes me feel good.


Then, the question is changed (and the answer stays the same):


Q: Do you like hugging?
A: Yes, I do.
Q: Why?
A: It relaxes me and makes me feel good.


There are a total of 10 questions for pairs of students to ask each other, and when the second question is applied to the first answer, be prepared for a very noisy class!

Creating a hilarious conversation between Cupid and a disgruntled mortal while working with parts of speech, vocabulary, pronouns and singular versus plural nouns.

This silly pair-work lesson will bring any class to life. And it's really short (about 10-15 minutes).

In the story, a mortal is complaining to Cupid. It seems Cupid has shot someone with an arrow causing a one-way love relationship.

Once students have filled in the information gaps, they begin reading their scripts. No one will be able to keep a straight face.

Beneath the silliness, students will be working with grammar including parts of speech, pronouns and subject/verb agreement.

Students navigate their way through a maze, taking "pop" quizzes about Valentine's Day along the way. This is a short but very active Valentine's Day lesson.

Pairs of students race against other pairs to complete the maze. When students answer the quiz questions correctly, they have to say a popular Valentine's Day "Love Phrase" a few times. For example, "My Heart Is Yours."

If they answer incorrectly, they have to say a longer "Love Phrase" many times, e.g., "You Are the Love of My Life."

What students won't realize (since they're so busy getting through the maze), is that they will be working with singular vs. plural nouns, directions and lots of listening.

With Valentine's Day coming up in a few days, this is a really fun lesson for the occasion. In groups of three, students ask each other questions, listen carefully, make choices (using 'I would...') and keep score. Through this, they will arrive at their respective 'Romance Quotient.'

Nearly everyone has (or had?) a yearning for romance. This lesson uses 21 questions to discover just How Romantic You Are.

Since most students are inherently interested in the topic of romance and in learning about their group mates' values, this lesson almost teaches itself (after the initial setting up) allowing the teacher to mill around the classroom offering assistance where needed.

The grammar focus of this lesson works with the transitive verb prefer and the adverb rather. You'll be surprised how quickly your students will become accustomed to using these words - because they have to! Even fairly low-level ability students will catch on quickly.

The Teachers' Instructions offer several additional variations and some interesting discussion topics which will naturally spring from this lesson.

A perfect lesson for Valentine's Day. In pairs, students read hints from their printouts in order for their partners to fill in the blank words on their puzzles. All of the answers are related to love, romance and/or Valentine's Day.

When all of the answers have been filled in, there's a second task for students to complete. Throughout the puzzle, there are gray boxes scattered about.

Once an answer has been written in each box, students match that number, either across or down, and re-write that same letter (from the above gray box) into the corresponding box in the message bar below the puzzle.

Afterwards, students could discuss love and romance in their own cultures. This can be very interesting as well as informative.

In pairs or small groups, students select the most appropriate verb for each sentence. When finished, they will have a complete recipe for dyeing Easter eggs.

Then, students can actually tell their partners or classmates how to actually color Easter Eggs - a very active and realistic communication lesson.

If there is space in the classroom, prepare all of the materials necessary to color eggs. In many cultures (which don't know about this odd custom), coloring Easter eggs can be really fun and educational.

With some classes, a discussion about the commercial aspects of Easter can be very interesting. For example:

Who, exactly is the Easter Bunny?
Why is it a rabbit?
Who decided that a rabbit can lay colored eggs?
Why is there usually an Easter egg hunt?
When did all the candy become part of this event?

In pairs or small groups, students go clockwise around the circle to see who can find the most words. When finished, the pair or group with the most words is declared the winner.

Students will have an incredibly ridiculous conversation with this lesson. One student is the Caller and the other is the Operator, one of Santa's elves. The caller asks Santa for his/her (very strange) Christmas wish.

Traditionally, children send a letter to Santa. But these are modern times and in this lesson, the letter is replaced with a hilarious telephone call.

A typical conversation might sound something like this:

Operator: Hello, Santa's answering service.
Caller: Aloha. This is Jerry Brown calling. Can I speak with Santa, please?
Operator: I'm sorry, Santa is snowboarding now. Can I help you?
Caller: Who are you?
Operator: This is Elf Agent Naomi speaking. Last year you asked Santa for a shocking pink, cashmere tennis racket, didn't you?
Caller: Yes, I did. But Santa gave me a red, rubber snow shovel.
Operator: Very sorry. What would you like for Christmas this year?
Caller: I really want 983 yellow buffaloes.
Operator: Yikes! They are popular this year... And on it goes.

Beneath this silliness, there is a serious lesson at work. Students ask each other for various items including parts of speech.

List making is a wonderful way for students to begin the development of sentences (which may eventually develop into paragraphs).

In this lesson, students make four lists for the holidays: I want [noun]..., I want to [verb]..., I'd like to [verb] to [place]..., and I need [noun]....

Once students fill in their Christmas Lists, the fun begins. They can ask each other about the items on their lists -OR- this can easily be converted into a guessing game.

But... there is a serious lesson at work here; students will be practicing four common grammar patterns:

I want a/an/some noun(s),
I want to [verb] a/an/some [noun(s)] for [person],
I'd like to [verb] to [place],
-and-
I need a/an/some [noun(s)] for our Christmas party.

There's a very simple way to elicit a great deal of discussion - after all, this is an English lesson. Students, in groups of four or five, have to unanimously agree on the items created for their lists. This forces students to persuade and negotiate with each other to arrive at the ideal Christmas lists.

Students receive a set of cards with items they were given in their Christmas stockings.

The other students in the group ask Yes / No Questions to identify what the items are.

When all of the items have been identified, students then trade their less wanted items for more desirable ones.

Although this lesson is very fun, there are a lot of fundamental elements of the English language being used including subject / verb agreement, singular vs. plural and count vs. non-countable nouns, articles, direct objects and possessive pronouns.

Just how much do students know about the commercialized legend of Santa? Give them this interesting quiz as a whole class activity, or let them work together in pairs or groups to answer the questions.

Most of this Santa folklore comes from the famous poem, "T'was the Night Before Christmas."

Do you know how many reindeer pull Santa's sleigh? Can you name them all? Is Santa married? How does he get into people's homes? Where does he get all the toys? Where does he live?

From an educational point of view, this lesson is perfect for working with present tense.

Answers are provided on the worksheet.

Is this a lesson or an icebreaker? Either way, students will have fun while learning English.

There are a set of Question Cards and Answer Cards. For each Question Card, students write an answer. When finished, all of the cards are shuffled and the questions are asked again - but this time, the answers are ridiculously funny.

For serious-minded teachers, this lesson works nicely with Type 2 conditionals (If..., would) and can also be a great listening lesson as well.

Though this lesson takes only about 20 minutes, your students will be laughing long after it's finished.

This lesson is intended only for mature (adult) students. Some of the replaced questions (to the innocent answers) may be rather sexually explicit. By the way, this activity works well at Christmas parties for teachers.

Adult students who do this lesson will be laughing long after it's finished.

The format is exactly the same as 07g above, but the questions are for adults. Try this activity at a Christmas Party and have a good time.
